Cinemalaya Rebyu Edition Part 2 (Mag-ingat sa Spoilers)

1.

Kagabi ang Awarding Ceremony ng Cinemalaya at nakakatuwang malamang nanalo ng Special Jury Prize "Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe" at Best Actress si Ina.

2. Astig

Nahuli akong makarating ng ilang minuto sa CCP kaya hindi ko lubos na nasimulan ang "Astig" na dinerehe ni GB Sampedro. Umiikot sa iba't ibang tauhang nakatira sa Maynila/Tondo, inilalarawan ng pelikula ang iba't ibang kailangang harapin at pagdaan ng mga tauhang pinalilibutan ng kahirapan at karahan, ang kanilang kailangang gawin para mabuhay at lumigaya. Nagsasali-salikop ang mga buhay ng mga tauhang sinusubaybayan ng pelikula pero sa kalakhan, wala naman talaga silang epekto sa isa't isa maliban na lang ang mga kuwento nina Ariel, na ginampanan ni Dennis Trillo, at ni Baste, na ginampanan ni Sid Lucero.

Dahil itinatampok ang Maynila, hinanapan ko ng paraan o pagtatangka sa bahagi ng pelikula kung paano napupunta sa foreground ang Maynila bilang tagpuan imbes na backdrop lamang.Pero wala naman akong napansing kakaiba.

Ang mahalaga, para sa akin, kapag may iba't ibang hibla ng naratibo sa isang akda ay kung paano nagkakatahi-tahi ang lahat sa dulo. At wala akong nakitang malinaw na pagtatahi. Maliban na lamang sa umuulit na tema ng kasawian. Na wala nang mabuti pang mangyayari sa Maynila. At ang mga tauhang may natitira pang hibla ng pag-asa ay lumayo sa Maynila, tulad ng ginawa ng tauhang si Boy.

Final note: Bakit laging last resrt ang mga bakla pag may problema ka? Ilang ulit iyong nangyari sa pelikula e.

3. Colorum

Tungkol lang naman talaga ang "Colorum" na dinerehe ni Jon Stefan Ballesteros, sa mga mabubuting taong nais magkaroon ng magandang buhay. Malas lang talaga ang mga mabubuting taong nakukulong sa isang masamang mundo at masamang sistema. At iyon lang naman talaga ang pangunahing problema ni Simon, na ginampanan ni Alfred Vargas, at ni Pedro, na ginampanan ni Lou Veloso. Si Simon ay isang modelong pulis ngunit dahil gusto niyang makapag-ipon at bigyan ng mabuting buhay ng kanyang nobya nasa ibang bansa, nagsa-sideline din siya bilang tsuper ng ilegal na FX taxi. Si Pedro naman ay isang dating presong binigyan ng parole dahil sa katandaan at ninanais lamang makausap ang kanyang anak na hindi na niya nakakausap mula pa nang bata pa ito. Magtatagpo ang kanilang buhay nang makabangga si Simon ng isang lalaki habang sakay-sakay si Pedro. At dahil ayaw niyang masabit sa gulo, tumakas siya kasama si Pedro at para maayos ang lahat, inutusan si Simon na dalhin ang FX kasama si Pedro sa Ormoc. At sa daan, marami silang tauhang makakasalubong.

Naaliw naman ako sa pelikulang ito. Namroblema lang siguro ako sa consistency ng mga tauhan. At ganoon din, sa mga coincidences. Bakit hindi tinulungan ni Simon ang kanyang binangga kung mabuti nga siyang tao? Pero may moralismo ang pelikula na hindi in-your-face. Sa mga sandaling kapit-patalim ka, may karapatan nga ba tayong maging mabuti?

4. Ang Nerseri

Walang partikular na kuwento "Ang Nerseri" na dinerehe ni Vic Asedillo Jr. Tungkol lamang ito sa pagsunod sa buhay ni Cocoy, na ginampanan ni Timothy Mabalot, habang binabantayan niya ang mga kapatid na may sakit sa isip. Bagaman si Cocoy na ang pinakanormal sa kanilang magkakapatid, unti-unting lumalabas ang mga sintomas na maaaring siya rin ay nadadapuan na ng sakit na mayroon ang kanyang mga kapatid.

Hindi ko pa lubos na nauunawaan ang kung may metaporikal bang antas ang konsepto ng pagkabaliw sa pelikula. Sa kabuuan, mukhang hindi. Mas nakikita ko ang nerseri/pag-aalaga bilang pangunahing konsepto ng pelikula. Sa kabaliwan, nawawala ka sa sarili. Ngunit sa pag-aalaga at maging sa pagmamahal sa isa, kailangang ibigay ang sarili. At ito, sa tingin ko, ang pangunahing internal dilemma ni Cocoy. Hahayaan lamang ba niyang manalo ang napipintong pagkabaliw na nararanasan niya o harapin ito't gawin ang kailangang gawin para mabuhay.

5. Dinig Sana Kita

Umniikot sa pagkakaibigan/pag-iibigan ng isang rocker chick at ng isang binging-mananayaw, hindi kaduda-duda kung bakit nanalo ng Audience Choice Award ang "Dinig Sana Kita" ni Mike Sandejas. Puno ng mga kaantig-antig na mga sandali kasabay ng mga magagaan na mga eksena. Malinaw na hindi ito art film, na isa itong love story. Ngunit dahil isa itong love story, tadtad ang pelikula ng mga cliche na bagay o trope. Una, kailangang nanggagaling sa magkaibang mundo ang dalawang pangunahing tauhan. At ano pa nga ba ang mas polar opposite pa sa rocker chick/deaf-dancer? Gayundin, dahil middle class si rocker chick, kailangang may daddy issues siya. At siyempre, hindi ipinakikita ang mukha ni emotionally distant daddy kasi lahat ng mga emotionally distant daddy ay walang mukha. At si deaf-dancer naman ay inabandona ng kanyang mga magulang. At dahil isa itong love story na may happy ending, kailangang bigyan lahat ng closure sa huling limang minuto.

Okey, medyo sarcastic ang rebyu ko ng "Dinig Sana Kita" pero kailangang sigurong unawain na pagkatapos mapanood ang mga pelikulang tulad ng "Ang Nerseri", "Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe", "Mangatyanan" at "Engkwentro", na pinahirapan ako nang todo-todo (pero yung masarap na hirap naman ang naranasan ko [sadistic amputa]), hindi lang siguro akong handang tanggapin intelectual obviousness ng pelikulang ito. Nag-enjoy din naman ako sa pelikulang ito. Maganda ang pagganap ng mga aktor, nina Zoe Sandejas at Romalito Mallari, maging ng mga support nila. Kaya nga siguro nanalo ng Audience Choice ang pelikulang ito dahil sa kanilang pagganap. At kahit na tadtad ng cliche ang kuwento, maayos pa rin ang pagdadala ni Mike Sandejas ng kabuuang tono ng pelikula mula drama at pagpapatawa. At natuto din ako ng kaunting sign language. Pero iyon nga, pagkatapos mapanood ng isang beses, ewan ko lang kung babalik-balikan ko ang pelikulang ito o pwede ko itong pag-usapan kasama ng iba.

Cinemalaya Rebyu Edition (Mag-ingat sa Spoilers)

1.

Oo, nag-commute ako papuntang CCP galing Katipunan, and back. At gagawin ko ulit iyon bukas. May tanong? Sa ngayon apat na competition films pa lamang ang mapapanood ko: "Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe", "Engkwentro", "Mangatyanan" at "24K". Apat pa ang papanoorin ko bukas: "Astig", "Colorum", "Nerseri" at "Dinig Sana Kita". Naubusan na ako ng oras para mapanood agad ang "Sanglaan" at "Last Supper No. 3".

2. Engkwentro

Dinerehe ni Pepe Diokno, umiikot ang pelikula sa pagitan ni Richard, na ginampanan ni Felix Roco at Raymond, na ginampanan ni Daniel Medrana. Pinuno si Richard ng "Bagong Buwan", isang gang, habang napasali naman si Raymond sa "Batang Dilim", isang karibal na gang. Isang tulak ng bato ang kanilang ama habang nasa Maynila ang kanilang ina. Sa simula pa lamang ng pelikula, ipinapakita ang desperasyon ni Richard na makaalis sa kanilang lugar kasama si Jenny Jane, na ginampanan ni Eda Nolan, dahil may hit na nakamarka sa kanya mula sa gumagalang "City Death Squad".

At iyon marahil ang pangunahing emosyong matatagpuan sa mga pangunahing tauhan ng pelikula: ang desperasyon. May mga tauhang wala nang pagnanasa pang umalis o nawalan na ng pag-asa, tulad na lamang ng ama nina Richard at Raymond at ang pokpok na ina ni Jenny Jane. At tila wala na talagang pag-asa ang ipinipintang imahen ng pelikula para sa mga tauhan lalo na sa nagbabantang death squad. Sa huli, mauunahan ng death squad ang pag-asang kinikimkim ni Richard para sa kanila ni Jenny Jane at Raymond.

At hindi lamang sa mismong pagpatay ng death squad pinapatay ang pag-asa sa mga taong katulad nina Richard na namulat sa kahirapan at krimen. Sa kabuuan ng pelikula, paulit-ulit ang boses ng mayor ng lungsod, na nanggagaling sa radyo, at kung paano niya binibingyan ng rasyonal ang irrasyonal na pagpatay ng mga death squad. Malinaw na mas mahalaga ang pagpapairal sa kaayusan kaysa sa pagpapaunlad ng pag-asa't pagnanais na pagbabago na nais makamit ng tulad ni Richard.

Diretso ang paghuli ng pelikula sa kahirapan ng di binabanggit na lungsod (o hindi ko lang narinig na banggitin), bagaman malinaw na Davao ang tinutukoy ng pelikula. Masikip, madumi at madaming tao ang mga eskinita't daan na nilalakad ng mga tauhan at ng kamera. Ngunit hindi lamang ito ang tagpuang hinuhuli ng kamera. Sa pinakasimula, sa gitna at dulo ng pelikula, mayroong mahahabang kuha ng dagat. Isa itong malinaw na pagtatambis sa makikitid at masisikip na eskinita ng squatters area. Puno ng simbolismo ang dagat. Ito dapat ang nagbibigay ng buhay para sa mga tao ngunit hindi ito sapat para suportahan ang libo-libong nasa kahirapan. Kaya't hindi sa dagat umaasa ang mga tao kundi sa isang tila mitolohikal na lugar tulad ng "Maynila" kahit na maaaring hindi rin iba ang matagpuan nila doon kumpara sa lilikasan nila.

Isang handheld camera lamang ang ginagamit ng buong pelikula at mga continueos shots ang pangunahing gamit ng pelikula. Minimal ang editing. May mga sandali na hindi mo kita ang mga mukha ng mga tao dahil sa dilim. At walang pakialam ang pelikula kung hindi ito manalo ng best cinematography. Iyon naman talaga ang punto. Ang hindi maganda.
3. Mangatyanan

Dinerehe ni Jerrold Tarrog, tungkol ang pelikula kay Himalaya "Laya" Marquez, na gimapanan ni Che Ramos, isang photographer. Inabuso si Laya ng kanyang ama noong bata pa siya kaya't naging kimkim o di-bukas sa iba. Ipinadala siya, kasama ng tauhang ginampanan ni Neil Ryan Sese, sa Isabela para kunan ang ritwal ng Mangatyanan ng mga Labwanan.

Ayokong gawan ng psychoanalysis ang buhay ni Laya ngunit ganoon ang lumalabas. Gumagana sa malay at kubling-malay na antas ang repression na ginagawa ni Laya sa trauma na naranasan niya. Gayundin, ginagamit niya ang ritwal ng Mangatyanan, na ibig sabihin ay muling pagkabuhay, upang muling maisilang at magkaroon ng bagong buhay na nakalaya mula sa trauma na naranasan niya. Arketipal ang mga ritwal bilang pagtatangkang makipag-ugnay ng malay sa kubling-malay, ng tao sa Diyos.

Ang problemang nararanasan ni Laya ay itinatapat sa problemang nararanasan ng mga Labwanan. Hindi isang totoong katutubong grupo, sinasalamin ng grupong ito marahas na pagbabagong nangyayari sa lipunan. Sa pagkawala ng mga ritwal at mga tradisyon, maaaring nawawala na rin ang malalim na pag-unawa ng isang komunidad sa sarili.

Hindi na naman talaga bago ang tema ng pang-aabuso ngunit nananatiling makapangyarihan ang pelikula dahil sa makapangyarihang pagganap ni Che Ramos. Oo na, aaminin ko na, nagka-crush na ako sa kanya sa pagtatapos ng pelikula. Pero seryoso, magaling talaga siya. Maganda rin ang pagkaka-edit ng pelikula, ito ang pinakamalinis na sinematograpiya sa lahat ng pananood ko sa ngayon.

4. 24K

Sinulat at dinerehe ni Ana Agabin, umiikot naman ang "24k" sa limang treasure hunter, si Manok, na ginampanan ni Julio Diaz, si Boyet, na ginampanan ni Jojit Lorenzo, si Fred, na ginampanan Archi Adamos, si Karlo, na ginampanan ni Miguel Vasquez, at ni Arturo, na ginampanan ni Christian Galura, at ang paghuhukay nila sa isang dig site sa Ilocos. Wala akong masasabing banghay ang pelikula. Mas picaresque o misadventure ang dating ng pelikula. Gayundin, mas character sketch ang lumalabas na paglalarawan sa mga tauhan. Kaya marahil marami ang magsabing hindi ito isang tight na pelikula di tulad ng "Mangatyanan" o ng "Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe". Ngunit may personalidad ang pelikula at malalim ang pagtatangka nitong suyurin ang sikolohiya ng mga treasure hunter.

Nakaugnay ako sa mga tauhang treasure hunter. Sa simula pa lang, kaduda-duda kung mayroon ngang kayaman silang natagpuan. Hindi ito "Da Vinci Code" o "National Treasure" kung saan mayroon nga talagang iniwang mga clue ang mga tao. Puno ng pamahiin ang mga treasure hunter na ipinapakita ng pelikula. Sa pinakaunang eksena pa lamang, sa isang albularyo lumapit ang mga treasure hunter upang siguraduhing nasa dig site nila ang kayamanan. Gayundin, nag-aalay sila ng pagkain, beer at yosi para sa mga espiritung nagbabantay daw ng kayamanan ni Yamashita. At maging ang mga bato'y nahahanapan ng mga clue kahit na baka kathang-isip lamang ang mga ito. Tila isang relihiyon ang treasure hunting dito. Hindi ang pagkakatagpo ng kayaman ang tunay na punto kundi ang paghahanap, ang pagkabangag na nakukuha mo sa pag-asang baka nariyan na nga ang kayamanan. Di ba parang pagsulat iyon, lalo na para sa mga nagsisimula?

Ngunit hindi sapat ang umasa. Bababa sana si Manok mula sa bundok na hinuhukayan nila ngunit naantala dahil ang hihingan niya ng tulong sa pagbaba ay nasa gitna ng isang ritwal na pasasalamat pagkatapos ng ani. Dito naging malinaw kay Manok ang pinagkaiba ng ginagawa nila kumpara sa mga ordinaryong taoong tunay na umaasa sa lupa. Na di tulad nilang walang kasiguraduhan ang biyayang makakamit, ang mga trabahong tulad ng pagsasaka ay may malinaw at patuloy na biyayang nakakamit. Para sa mga treasure hunter, walang sandali ng pasasalamat hangga't hindi nakukuha ang kayamanan.

Bagaman napakapayak ng banghay at maging ng mga tauhan, nakuha pa rin ng pelikula ang atensiyon ko dahil sa pagpapatawa't sense of humor nito.

5. Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe

Biased ako para sa pelikulang ito dahil kilala ko si Sir Vim Yapan. Kaya siguro hindi ko na masyadong pag-uusapan pa ito. Nakakatuwa lang sigurong makita sa screen ang uri ng pagkukuwento na nakasanayan ko sa mga maikling kuwento at sa nobela ni Sir Vim. Panatag ang mga kuha ng kamera at maganda ang pagkakalatag ng mood sa buong pelikula. At nakakatawa ang reaksiyon ng mga manonood. Ayon sa reveiwer ng PEP na si Fidel Antonio Medel, frontrunner "Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe" at "Mangatyanan" para sa top awards ng Cinemalaya. Binanggit ata niya iyon sa review niya ng "Engkwentro".

UBOD Writers Series 2009 Announces Call for Submissions

The National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the National Committee on Literary Arts (NCLA) and the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practice (AILAP) are now accepting manuscripts for the UBOD series 2009. 12 writers who have not released book-length titles will be given a chance to have their first book published under UBOD New Authors Series.

The qualified languages are: Luzon (Tagalog, Bikolano, Ilokano,Kapampangan, Pangasinense), Visayas (Cebuano, Waray. Kinaray-a, Hiligaynon) and Mindanao (Maranao, Tausug, Magindanaon, Chavacano). The manuscript should be 40-60 pages in chapbook length. 20-40 poems or 5-10 short fiction. The most exceptional pieces in their manuscript shall be translated into Filipino or English.

Send two copies of the manuscript to the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practice (AILAP) c/o The Department of Filipino, 3rd Floor Dela Costa Bldg., School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City 1108. Butas, etc.

1. Butas

Humilom na ang ginalid ko pagkatapos magpatanggal ng wisdom tooth. Ang problema lang, sumasabit ang pagkain at tinga sa butas na naiwan pagkatapos tanggalin ang wisdom tooth. Kailangan ko tuloy magmumog nang mabuti pagkatapos kumain.

2. Auto

Headline kanina sa ANC na inaprubahan na ng SEC ang joint venture ng Smartmatic at TIM. Kebs. Sa personal na opinyon ko, kahit na automated o hindi ang eleksiyon, marami pa ring nadadaya. Hindi ibig sabihing may kaharap kang makina, mapagkakatiwalaan na iyon. Pala-palaging may tao sa likod ng mga makina. Mariming itinatago ang makinang nasa harapan mo na maaaring hindi mo maintindihan. Iyon ang mapanganib sa automated. Kahit na anong gawing pagtatangkang maging transparent ng sistema, hindi pa rin transparent.

3. Sidenote

Napanood n'yo na ba ang ad ng Comelec na naghihikayat magparehistro ng mga tao? Ang pangit, di ba? Parang high school project. Langya, parang mas maganda pa nga ang ilang mga high school project diyan. Wala lang. Natawa lang ako sa kapangitan ng ad na iyon.

4. Brothers

Natapos ko na ring basahin (sa wakas) ang dambuhalang "Brothers" ni Yu Hua. Napasama sa short list ito noong nakaraang Man Asia Literary Prize kung kailan nanalo si Chuck Syjuco. Tungkol ang nobela sa magkapatid na Song Gang at Baldy Li. Mas pwedeng tawagin silang adoptive brothers dahil hindi naman talaga sila dugong magkapatid. Nang mabalo ang ama ni Song Gang at ina ni Baldy Li, nagpakasal sila at naging "magkapatid" sina Song Gang at Baldy Li. Ngunit hindi lamang ang ugnayang ito ang nagpatatag sa kanilang pagiging magkapatid. Lumaki silang dalawa sa panahon ng Cultural Revolution at ang kanilang karanasan ng pagkaapi at pagkasawi nang mga panahong iyon ang nagbuklod sa kanilang dalawa. Mula sa kanilang kabataan, dadalhin tayo ng nobela sa kanilang pagtanda. Mapapangasawa ni Song Gang ang pinakamagandang dalaga ng bayan nila, si Lin Hong, habang magiging mayaman at makapangyarihan si Baldy Li sa panahon ng pag-ugat ng matinding kapitalismo sa Tsina.

Puno ng irony ang nobela at mula dito nanggagaling ang pagpapatawa. May ibang pagkakataon naman na gumagamit ng slapstick ang nobela para magpatawa. Ngunit malinaw na pinagtatawanan ng nobela ang kakatwang sitwasyon ngayon ng Tsina bilang yumayaman at nagiging makapangyarihang bansa. Interesante rin ang ugnayan ng sekswalidad at pag-unlad. Inilalarawan si Baldy Li bilang malibog na tao habang kabaligtaran naman si Song Gang. Ano ang ugnayan nito sa magkataliwas na kinahinatnan nila sa dulo? May ugnayan ba ang ambisyon at sekswalidad?

Huli tala, may ilang typo akong nasalubong habang binabasa ang nobela. Mukhang minadali ang pagpapalabas ng nobela. Gayundin, may mga pangungusap na medyo awkward. Pero isa itong nakakatawang nobela at mas nag-enjoy ako dito kumpara sa mas seryosong "Wolf Totem".

5. Of Love and Other Demons

Katatapos ko lang basahin ang "Of Love and Other Demons" ni Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Tipikal na Gracia Marquez ang nobela. Tungkol ang nobela sa buhay ni Sierva Maria, anak ng isang marquis, at kung paano siya namatay diumano sa rabis. At iimbestigahan siya bilang posibleng sinasapian ng demonyo. Ngunit lunsaran lamang ang nangyari kay Sierva Maria upang maging lunsaran ng konsepto ng nobela tungkol sa sapi/sanib o possession. At lilitaw ang konsepto na ito sa iba pang mga tauhan ng nobela. Lulong sa droga ang ina ni Sierva, isang literal na pagkasapi ng "masamanng espiritu" ngunit sintomas lang naman talaga ng pagsisisi't lungkot na nauna nang sumapi sa kanya. Madidiskaril ang magandang hinaharap ni Padre Cayetano sa kanyang pag-ibig kay Sierva Maria. Sasabihin pa niya na nasasapian siya ng demonyo dahil sa kanyang pagmamahal. Sinasapian naman ng kapangyarihan ang Obispo at malinaw na makikita ito sa kanyang pagtatangkang i-exorcise si Sierva Maria. Pride naman ang sumasapi kay Abernuncio lalo na ang kanyang kasiguraduhan sa kapangyarihan niyang manggamot. Kaya't hindi lamang iisa ang mukha ng demonyo tulad na hindi lamang iisa ang pangunahing tauhan sa mga akda ni Garcia Marquez.

Manok is a middle-class treasure hunter who’s been digging for Japanese treasure for years. He and his companions are in the final stage of their current site in the mountains of Suyo, Ilocos Sur, an area reputed as a Japanese stronghold during World War II. All the signs at their site indicate that they are certain to find treasure. With their resources nearly depleted, Manok convinces his godfather in marriage, Freddie, to finance the rest of their operations. Manok, Freddie, and another friend, Boyet, journey back to the site hoping that, as their medium predicted, they will find gold before Manok’s wife gives birth in a month’s time.

Each morning, baskets of black fruits mysteriously appear by the front yard of Fe. Thinking that it was a reconciliatory gesture from her abusive husband, Dante, Fe tells him about it. This only confirms Dante's suspicions that she might be entertaining a lover. Fearing her husband's jealousy, Fe grows even more scared as the fruits kept coming, a step closer to her front door. She keeps everything to herself until she turns to a former suitor, Arturo. When Fe urges Arturo to elope, she finds out that the young man has far more binding commitments with his family. Caught between an abusive husband and an impotent lover, Fe has to decide. Will she escape with her elusive suitor who could very well be just a figment of her imagination or stay trapped with the men in her real life who could never protect her nor make her happy?

It tells the story of Ariel, a conman who has to leave his girlfriend upon learning that she is in love with him; Boy, an expectant young father who has to sell his body to pay his wife's hospital bill; Ronald, a Chinese mestizo who is coming to grips with his identity; and Baste, an overly protective son of an OFW who has to avenge his sister. The film tells the stories of the tough guys of Manila and their resolve to survive the dirt and filth of the "Distinguished and Ever Loyal City."

TATANG by Jean Paolo "Nico" Hernandez
Tatang Ruding lives in the streets of the Philippines’ urban Manila with his grandaughter Ester. Tatang makes ends meet the easiest way he knows, stealing and pickpocketing. He does it with Ester as his aide and apprentice. One incident goes awry and Tatang gets beaten up by a group of men. Tatang bitterly takes out his misfortune on Ester and starts to feel useless. Ester, on the other hand, starts to make it up to Tatang by becoming the breadwinner. She becomes better and better with stealing and Tatang realizes that he created a monster in her. One day, Tatang hears a gunshot---a moment that will serve as a wake-up call and will change the rest of his being.

UGAT SA LUPA (Roots on Earth) is a non-dialog film about a farming family who lives in an island. It dramatizes the family’s hardships of living in an island bereft of fresh water, hence their struggle to fetch water from another island in order to water the plants periodically. It is also about family relationships and the sacrifices of elder siblings for the benefit of the younger ones.

Bok is a playful boy who enjoys counting the things he sees around him, posting pieces of paper everywhere, and playing with his favorite toy top. One day, Bok accidentally forgets his toy top at his grandmother’s house. When he decides to come back and get it, Bok discovers something far more precious than his beloved toy.

LATUS by John Paul Seniel
This true to life based story is about Vicknelyn, who was raised by her father with too much punishment, and Jenelza, her good friend. Both are 16 years old and studied in the same school where they became friends. They differ in their economic status in life and share same experiences on corporal punishment. To gain relief from pain, Vicknelyn joined the Kuyaw gang who have similar experiences as hers. On the other hand, Jenelza focused her time on her studies. When Jenelza witnesses Vicknelyn being punished by her father, she is traumatized.
